Getting Fingerprints from a car.?

When my friends car was broken into the cop that we talked to at the station said they would not take prints, from the inside of the car because it is hard to get prints from the interiour, and that the powder can stain the inside. Is this true or were they just being uniterested in a petty crime. What surfaces are printable inside of a vehicle?
